Those of you who have studied with me will have noticed my insistence on some concepts that I consider fundamental for a deep understanding of existence beyond the cliches of knowledge that make up both our “manas” mind and our “buddhi” mind. One of them is “morphism”, or mapping.
One of the great difficulties of the philosophy of different traditions is the difficulty in establishing morphisms of concepts. When we enter a new terrain of thinking, feeling or volition, our Soul traces morphisms that take the unfamiliar to the familiar.
The “Path of Beauty” is one of those terrains. The Soul-Spirit relationship is totally intuitive, direct and spontaneous, but you have to know how to listen, that is, forget the language of everyday life full of ambiguities and inherited errors. Yes, we not only inherit positive things, our traditions are also accumulations of mistakes, committed with the best intentions, of course. The metaphor of the dance of Shiva and Shakti describes the relationship well, but only if we know the Shivaite tradition thoroughly. For those who know Vedanta, the concept is the Jivatman. For Christians and Muslims it is necessary to delve deeper into the secrets of the so-called Annunciation, or the breathing of the Spirit of Gabriel into Mary. In the philosophy of German Romanticism, from the end of the 18th century to the mid-19th century, it is the opposition between Spirit and Nature.
Synthesizing these traditions with affective neuroscience, I developed in Mythopoetics the concept of “Life-Intelligence” (familiar to those of you who attended and suffered the lectures in my “Rationality and Emotions” course), the idea that there is a continuum of intelligence that goes from the simplest single-celled forms of life to us. The link becomes clear from the understanding of the neural circuits of the animal midbrain, the precortical brain, where the basic emotional protocols are inscribed.
Understanding the Soul/I Am relationship is a threshold. A mere intellective understanding is not valid, nor is a mere emotional understanding valid, nor a mere volitional understanding. Each of us brings more resistance in one of the three dimensions of the Soul. These resistances are the Three Knots that Life-Intelligence encounters.
Today I put here the Soul/Spirit morphisms projected on different conceptual screens.
Soul/Spirit----→ Nature/Spirit
Soul/Spirit ----→ Life/Inteligence
Soul/Spirit-----→ Shakti/Shiva
Soul/Spirit-----→ María/Gabriel
Soul/Spirit-----→ Jiva/Atman
All these mappings are not isomorphic with each other. We cannot establish point-to-point correspondences. When we project onto another conceptual screen, things are lost along the way.
