Waking is a form of sleep. In it, as happens every night in relation to our daytime identity, we forget the other identity. In waking life, we forget our Atman in the same way that in daily sleep we forget our masks. Sometimes masks linger in the dream, more like caricatures than full masks. In most cases, we function on the dream side with disfigured copies of the waking masks, barely suitable for a basic histrionics of pleasure and pain in the realm of dreams. Similarly, our waking masks are disfigured copies of other, more far-reaching identities. To awaken is to enter the space in which we can see waking identities as masks. But that is only the first threshold that gives access to a transfiguration of the world.
A deeper identity is shown to us when we look lovingly at ourselves in the Labyrinth of Mirrors we call the Universe. Those of you who have seen the Pir Vilayat video have been introduced into that Sufi Labyrinth.
It is an idea that Ibn Arabi developed as a fundamental part of the deep psychology of the Sufis. It underlies the loving ideas of Rumi that have found their way into the psyche of the modern world, so much in need of love and joy. Let me write this secret at plain sight it in the expression that Pir Vilayat gives it:
There is a further perspective in which you discover in your consciousness the action of the Divine Consciousness through which, God discovers Himself through the discovery that you make of God as You.
An explanatory prosaic analysis. A mirror has two components: a supporting reflective surface, and an image that is reflected on said support.
First mirror. Support: our consciousness, our awareness. Something is reflected in this support: the Divine Consciousness acting as the Universe.
Second mirror. Support: Divine Consciousness as Universal action. Two things are reflected in this support: the first mirror (both the support and the image) and You (as a partner in the Divine action through your gaze).
Third mirror. Support: You, but You as a Primordial Human with infinite attributes. Three things are reflected in this support: the first two mirrors and a discovery, the discovery that you make of God as You.
The field of infinite mirrors that these three mirrors generate is God's discovery of Him/Her/It...Self. Imagine a triangular field whose vertices were those mirrors:
Vertex A: The limited Consciousness of our particular psychic formation, of our mask narrative and our capacities.
Vertex B: Divine Consciousness as Universal action.
Vertex C: You as Primordial Human.
